Pushing the Boundaries with the Experimental

Any style or design you desire

We reserve the ‘LABS’ project category for unique endeavours that transcend conventional joinery. These projects demand innovation and creativity, areas where Formatio excels. Building a reputation for overcoming challenges that perplex industry peers, our ‘LABS’ ventures vary widely, involving intricate 3D modelling and crafting numerous irregular geometric parts. A number of our commissions have taken the form of architectural art, gracing the entrance areas of well-known landmarks.

New techniques

By embracing and applying modern techniques in joinery and millwork, Formatio provides Designers and Interior Architects the opportunity to bring their conceptual ideas and sketches to life.

Wood Slat Wall Art

These wooden slats, made from light coloured Maple timber are cut sequentially to express a wave like form.

3D height maps

By converting pixel data from 2D images into 3D height maps, we can create wall art where tonality is achieved by shadows cast by the topography.

Laser Cut metal

We can laser cut metal in 2D to create interesting indoor and outdoor architectural screens.

Recycled Materials

Sometimes we are asked to use recycled materials, such as cardboard tubes to create displays with an environmental theme.

Experts in Irregular Polyhedral Construction

Formatio won the tender to produce more than 10 non-identical display walls with an irregular polyhedral form. These display walls were designed to showcase the products of a company which produced plastic polymers, using a design language which resonated with the company’s products.

Ensuring that all the edges met perfectly required detailed 3D modelling, with the subsequent production of 500 non-identical parts which we expertly assembled.

Large Maps & Signage

This giant artistic map was produced for the front of a large sliding door, some 6 metres in width. The door features on a landmark hotel in Nürnberg. By converting pixel data from a 2D image into 3D height maps, we created a topography/relief on the sheet material using our CNC machinery. The shadows in the ‘valleys’ help to add depth to the overall composition.
